Logline:
On the day of her father’s funeral, Abril Flores must wrangle her stubborn mother and chaotic family to honor her father’s final wish to be buried with his favorite Bible.
The character's age:
50 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
Abril is the eldest daughter of Chuy and Rosario. She’s a woman who navigates chaos and difficult feelings with her problem-solving skills and a sharp sense of curmudgeonly humor. She takes pride in her own resilience, going back to her days as a young girl picking up emotional labor from her immature parents. She’s fastidious and prickly but a fiercely loving daughter, wife, and mother. Typical of first-born children, she sets aside her own feelings and focuses on completing the tasks at hand. She has her dad’s tenderness, but she has also inherited her mother’s temper.
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. This is a primarily native-Spanish speaking role, with some accented English lines. She’s a native of Mexico who has lived in the United States for the last 25 years.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
Abril is deeply loving to everyone in her family, even if that manifests underneath some level of sarcasm and teasing. Her greatest conflict in this story is with her mother, who was in denial about the severity of Papa Chuy’s illness and on the day of the funeral, is moving with no urgency to locate the missing Bible.
The character's age:
78 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
The obvious source of Abril’s stubbornness, Rosario is a similarly proud woman who has been through a lot in her life. Like Abril, her sense of humor primarily manifests in teasing (and taking advantage of the fact that we let old people say whatever they want). You can criticize her for being emotionally immature, but raising a giant family with a husband who wasn’t dependable focused her priorities on her family’s health, not effective communication.
When we meet Rosario, she’s been living with Abril and David for the past two years. Her husband Chuy entered hospice end-of-life care two months ago. Even after countless doctor’s visits and explanations, she’s still in denial that her husband has a terminal diagnosis.
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. This is a Spanish-only speaking role.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
With her husband, Rosario’s denial about the state of his health makes her cold and frustrated. At her best, she’s a sharp woman who enjoys the social leeway given to old ladies, as long as they’re funny. Her relationship with her daughter has always been combative day-to-day, but both undeniably love and respect the other; they would have given up on their relationship a long time ago if that wasn’t the case.
The character's age:
78 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
Papa Chuy, born Jesus Guillermo Gonzalez, is Abril’s father and Rosario’s husband. Chuy was a wonderful grandfather, a warm father, and a not-great husband in his younger years. When we meet him, he’s made some kind of peace with his diagnosis (he frankly never imagined he’d live this long) and is taking full advantage of the “I’m a dying man” card. He and Rosario treated Abril as more of a third parent than a daughter when she was growing up, and so his trust and love for her is deep, profound, and unshakeable.
In his old age, he became softer and more of a clown, much to his wife’s annoyance. Although frail as he manages late-stage COPD and complications from lung cancer, resulting in coughing fits, Chuy wisely understands his time is limited and has prioritized comfort and warm times with his family.
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. This is a Spanish-only speaking role.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
At peak health, Chuy is playful and enjoys making his family laugh. In old age, he’s been a great grandfather, father, and husband, but Rosario remembers when he was a far-from-perfect young man. He’s particularly close to his oldest daughter, Abril, who insisted he come to live with her family when his health began declining. He’s one of the few people who can break through to Abril’s sensitive side and offer her levity in the midst of a difficult time.
The character's age:
50 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
Abril’s husband. He’s a dutiful husband and a loving father, but often does that guy thing where he hyper fixates on how he’s going to solve a problem and overlooks the people he’s trying to solve the problem for.
His relationship with his wife is built on fiercely mutual respect; similarly, they’re sharply attuned to when the other genuinely needs help. He provides comical relief with his unorthodox methods (he’s really just a suburban dad) and becomes a much needed source of support for Abril as she navigates her complex relationship with her mother.
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. This is a Spanish-only speaking role.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
David occasionally gets tunnel vision, but has just enough emotional awareness to understand his wife’s feelings take priority on the day of her father’s funeral. Although Abril is usually the more sensitive one to her children, David is playing that role today since her emotional focus is elsewhere.
The character's age:
21 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
Beatriz Carolina Flores is the eldest child of Abril and David. She’s a high-achiever in all facets of her life, and carries all the stress that comes with that. Romina was Bety’s puppy before she left for college at UC Irvine, and thus Bety illogically takes on all responsibilities related to her, so now this tiny woman is spending her day wrangling an eighty-pound hyperactive dog!
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. Speaks English fluently (she was born and raised in the States) and speaks Spanish with an American accent. She switches to spoken Spanish when emotionally heated.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
We only have time to allude to it in this story, but Bety has inherited the oldest-child heaviness and stress from her mother. Because she’s so deadset on figuring out things herself, her closest loved ones sometimes don’t even realize she needs help. On the day of the funeral, she wears a butterfly-shaped hair pin that was a gift from her Papa Chuy.
The character's age:
17 years old
Basic personality / physical traits:
Hector is Abril and David’s son. He’s the baby of the family, and is still grieving his grandfather’s death. He tries his best to do what’s expected of him, and ends up being pulled in several directions at once. He’s quite sensitive, and carries his dad’s nervous energy in his posture and his expressions.
Race and Accent:
Mexican descent preferred. He speaks English fluently, but his Spanish has a heavy American accent. A voice that leans young, reminiscent of late-stage puberty is preferred.
Relationship to other characters in the story:
Hector quietly resents that he’s still treated as the baby of the family, but his inclination to daydream and wander off does make it legitimately hard to trust him with family tasks! In the two years that Papa Chuy and Mama Rosario have lived at home, Hector became much closer with them even with the language barrier (Hector’s not the best with spoken Spanish). He’s incredibly nervous about doing a liturgical reading at the funeral, but wants to do something to honor his departed grandpa.
